Posting Date: 2020.04.10

Dentons has been recognized for its work across multiple offices and jurisdictions at the 2019 Deal of the Year Awards organized by CEE Legal Matters, a leading publication about Europe’s emerging legal markets. In 2019, the Firm was involved, alongside other law firms, in four awarded deals: in Hungary, Latvia, Poland and Turkey.

The Deal of the Year award in Hungary was given to Extreme Digital/ eMAG merger, where Dentons has advised Hungarian online consumer electronics retailer Extreme Digital and its shareholders in connection with the merger with eMAG Hungary, which belongs to South African Naspers Group. The transaction team was led by partner Edward Keller.

In Latvia, the award went to airBaltic's debut Eurobond issuance, a part of which was led by Dentons’ London-based Capital Markets partner Nick Hayday, where the Firm advised the leading airline in the Baltic region that is 80 per cent owned by the government of Latvia, on its successful debut Reg S bond issue of €200 million 6.75% bonds due in 2024

The acquisition of DCT Gdansk S.A. from Global Infrastructure Fund II won the Deal of the Year in Poland. The Dentons team in Warsaw advised one of the investors on the acquisition of stake in DCT Gdansk – Poland’s leading container facility, and the only deep-water terminal in the Baltic Sea Region. This was the largest M&A transaction completed in Poland in 2019. Partner Jakub Celiński and counsel Arkadiusz Wierzbicki played key roles on the transaction.

Working alongside BASEAK (an Istanbul-based law firm cooperating with Dentons), the Firm also worked on another winning deal in Turkey - Sisal’s successful bid to operate Turkish State Lottery. The team in Istanbul, led by Dr. Selim Keki, represented Şans Dijital ve Interaktif Hizmetler Teknoloji Yatirim A.S., a subsidiary of Demirören Holding, in establishing a joint venture with Sisal for a bid regarding the privatization of the Turkish National Lottery (called Milli Piyango).

CEE Legal Matters’ Deal of the Year Awards recognize the most important transactions in CEE across the year. The awards are exclusively peer-selected, with partners from across international and domestic law firms in all relevant jurisdictions being involved in selecting the shortlist and voting for the winners.
